Oculus MRC with SteamVR

Some Oculus Rift (PC) games supported Oculus’s “Mixed Reality Capture” system. If you wanted to do shenanigans with LIV (which requires SteamVR), you can use Revive ExternalCamera mod.

The Videos page has demonstration videos of these games/mods.

Dance Central VR

This is an Oculus Rift (PC) game that supports Oculus Mixed Reality Capture.

The game gets stuck on an infinite loading screen, unless you patch it.

Steam VR, modified Revive with LIV avatar setup

Steam VR users will need modified Revive (ExternalCamera) that has the following changed in REV_CAPI.cpp

  • ovr_GetSessionStatus with HasInputFocus always 1 and OverlayPresent always 0
    • This lets you open LIV overlay to move the camera without the game pausing.
  • ovr_GetExternalCameras providing some spoofed values and the position/rotation of LIV virtual tracker.

Run/create shortcut for Dance Central:

  • Target:
    • (PathToModifiedRevive)\ReviveInjector.exe “F:\Oculus\Software\harmonix-dance-central-vr\DCVR\Binaries\Win64\DCVR-Win64-Shipping.exe” -mixedreality -externalcomposition /legacy
  • Start in:
    • F:\Oculus\Software\harmonix-dance-central-vr\DCVR\Binaries\Win64

LIV (Latest) setup

  • On the MANUAL tab
    • SDK unticked.
    • Target to be blank to allow using OBS’s transparency capture.
      • Hint: open a program that can appear in this list (e.g. mspaint), select it as the Target, then close the program so that the selection changes to blank.
    • Composition set to Default.
      • We can’t use LIV’s Legacy Composition for this game, you will need to use OBS to manually do it.

Oculus native with camera setup

Part 1

Part 2

  • Run/create shortcut for Dance Central:
    • Target:
      • “F:\Oculus\Software\harmonix-dance-central-vr\DCVR\Binaries\Win64\DCVR-Win64-Shipping.exe” -mixedreality -directcomposition
    • Start in:
      • F:\Oculus\Software\harmonix-dance-central-vr\DCVR\Binaries\Win64

Composition notes

This game doesn’t critically need the realities to align but it is annoying to find a camera position that frames everything well without part of the environment or a dancing NPC getting in the way.

Use OBS to manually composite the game halves and LIV output (with transparency) windows together.

  • (optional) Left-side: Foreground
    • Use Game Capture with Chroma key filter.
  • LIV: Avatar
    • Use Game Capture with Transparency ticked.
  • Right-side: Background
    • Use Game Capture

If you don’t plan on resizing the game window:

  • On each of the Game Captures:
    • Add filter ‘Crop/Pad’ to split the halves.
    • Stretch the halves to fill the canvas.

If you do plan on resizing the game window and/or don’t want to mess around with changing cropping:

  • On each of the Game Captures:
    • Add filter ‘Scaling/Aspect Ratio’ with resolution 32:9.
    • Transform > Edit
      • Bounding Box Type: Scale to height of bounds
      • Bounding Box Size set to your canvas size (e.g. 1920 x 1080)
  • On Foreground transform:
    • Position 1px,0px
    • Position alignment and alignment in bounding box: Top Left
  • Background transform:
    • Position: 1919px,0px
    • Position alignment and alignment in bounding box: Top Right

Espire 1: VR Operative (Oculus PC/Steam version)

I only have access to the Steam version, however when it runs in Oculus mode it can do Oculus Mixed Reality Capture.

Using modified Revive makes it possible to run the game’s Oculus MRC with LIV avatar and add HACK_DISABLE_STATS that prevents a crash at the pause/possession screen when using vanilla Revive.

Launch arguments: -mixedreality -externalcomposition /legacy

Composition can benefit from a colour correction filter to turn down the brightness of the mixed reality output.

Myst (Oculus PC version)

I only have access to the game from Oculus Store, the PC version supports Oculus Mixed Reality Capture.

Have only tested with v1.7.0 with the modified Revive for about 10 seconds. If it’s anything like Espire 1 there’s a good chance the Steam version can be ran in Oculus mode through Revive.

Run/create shortcut for Myst:

  • Target:
    • (PathToModifiedRevive)\ReviveInjector.exe “F:\Oculus\Software\cyan-worlds-inc-myst\Myst\Binaries\Win64\Myst-Win64-Shipping.exe” -vr -d3d11 -mixedreality -externalcomposition /legacy
  • Start in:
    • F:\Oculus\Software\cyan-worlds-inc-myst\Myst\Binaries\Win64

Since it’s Oculus MRC, the composition method is the same as Dance Central VR.

Loosely supported

Phantom: Covert Ops

From Oculus Store, the PC version supports Oculus Mixed Reality Capture but it’s probably not worth trying in mixed reality, in the few minutes I tried came across:

  • The menu is very laggy.
  • Needed to turn down graphics settings to load into campaign without it running out of memory.
  • Output too bright, maybe just needs color correction filter in OBS.
  • Output shows in-game body without a head.
